Is Chiropractic Care An Alternative To Surgery?
When you're dealing with a painful injury involving your joints, you may find that your doctor refers you to an orthopedic surgeon. In some cases, chiropractic care can be an alternative to surgery but most people don't know that. In fact, we regularly treat patients who were told they would need surgery and we're able to get them feeling better without going through an invasive procedure.
Surgery is the right option for some people but did you know that you may have another option? In this article, you'll learn about Danielle and her frozen shoulder. She had surgery and found that she actually got worse so she came to use for treatment. You'll see exactly how we treat a chronic issue to avoid Danielle needing to undergo another surgery.
Is Chiropractic Care An Alternative To Surgery?
When you have a joint or musculoskeletal issue, you're most likely going to seek out an orthopedic surgeon or a chiropractor. Orthopedic surgeons and chiropractors both see patients who are experiencing discomfort caused by musculoskeletal issues.
We both want to help rehabilitate patients to improve their quality of life and help them feel better. The key difference is that orthopedic surgeons use surgical interventions to treat musculoskeletal issues while chiropractors use a range of non-invasive techniques such as dry needling, soft tissue work, and laser therapy.
In Danielle's case, she opted to have rotator cuff surgery first in the hopes that it would fix her frozen shoulder. After the surgery, her symptoms worsened and she wasn't able to move her shoulder which greatly restricted her range of motion. Something as simple as combing your hair is impossible without that range of motion.
Danielle was told that she would need to undergo another surgery but she decided to come to use instead. We worked with Danielle over a series of months and her consistency has paid off. She is now able to comb her own hair and she has a much better range of motion. We used a range of treatments including dry needling, laser therapy, e-stim, physical therapy, and soft tissue work and we've been able to get Danielle results without invasive surgery and the recovery time that comes along with it.
In a study conducted on Washington State workers with disability claims for back injuries, an interesting pattern emerged. 42.7% of workers who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor. That tells us that the first doctor you see has a huge impact on your choice to have surgery but it also tells us that a very small percentage of people who first saw a chiropractor went on to have surgery. That is astounding and it can be inferred that their treatment was responsible for this.
Most people, including many of those in the study, don't know that chiropractic care can be an alternative to surgery. Of course, the right choice for you depends on your injury, the recovery time, the risks associated with the specific surgery you're considering, and the time it will take to get the results you want. We think it's best to know your options and to explore them before making any decisions about invasive surgeries.
